For our students who prefer electronic music to rock n roll, the Beyond the Grade Beats Audio Programming Class teaches students how to create music electronically and teaches basic music theory. Every year, we face the same problems: students who are interested in music, but their families cannot afford for-profit programs; and students who are uninterested in traditional music education and instruments. We are challenged to provide an engaging context with relevant content for modern music education. We believe the answer is through using modern, EDM material to engage students in hands-on music and theory education.
Modern music is driven by technology. EDM, R&B and Hip-Hop, and many genres use beat programming software to produce music. This software is a new musical instrument – whose musicians must be able to manipulate the program, have a solid understanding of music theory, math skills, and have opportunities to practice and create.
Beyond the Grade has created a music class curriculum for EDM, digitally created music, using a music-based methodology to create STEM access for underserved students. The classes will teach music theory, music production, songwriting, recording techniques, basic instrument instruction and music theory, through modules wherein the students apply the music lesson to programming on the software. Students will work solo and in partnership with each other, collaborating through the software. The class modules allow for progressive learning for all students, allowing instructors to meet the needs of all students, regardless of experience and proficiency.
